I think humans have evolved with a deep need to be creative. Modernity often asks us to replace creative expression with purchased products, whether those be clothing, furniture, music or food. But is it possible to satisfactorily replace a multi-layered creative experience with a cash transaction? I don’t think so.

This blog documents my attempts to use my creativity rather than opening my wallet. To reconnect with materials and where they come from. To understand the process of creating something rather than admiring the finished product.

‘Machen’ is the German verb for to do, to make and also to matter. It’s a nice reflection of this part of my life.

My name’s Alison.  I live in Canberra, Australia.
